1. Gather Materials: Obtain a heavy-duty tarp, roofing nails or screws, a ladder, a utility knife, and safety equipment (gloves and goggles).

2. Inspect the Roof: Assess the extent of the damage and determine the area that needs protection.

3. Choose the Right Tarp Size: Select a tarp that is larger than the damaged area, allowing for at least a few feet of overlap.

4. Position the Ladder: Set up the ladder securely to access the roof safely.

5. Secure the Tarp:

   • Place the tarp over the damaged section, ensuring it extends beyond the edges.

   • Start securing it from the top down. Wrap the top edge over a roof batten or another sturdy structure to keep it in place.

   • Use roofing nails to attach the tarp firmly to the roof.

6. Secure the Bottom Edge: Anchor the bottom edge with additional nails.

7. Check for Gaps: Ensure there are no gaps where water can enter and adjust the tarp as necessary.

8. Monitor the Tarp: Regularly check the tarp for damage or displacements until permanent repairs can be made.
